How to Clean Your Pool After a Pool Party: Everything You Need to Know

So, you’ve had your first pool party of the season. The guests are gone, you’re tired, and you don’t know where to start with cleanup. We get it! No one likes the cleanup part of the party. So, to make things easier for you, here’s a quick-and-clean primer on how to clean your pool after a pool party. Just follow these steps and you’ll be finished faster than you ever thought possible.

How to Clean Your Pool After a Pool Party in 5 Steps

1. Straighten Up Your Deck & Patio

Before getting started on any of the actual pool cleaning tasks, you will want to make sure to clean up all the clutter around the pool. Making sure to get all pool toys and floats out of the pool and rinsed off. Chlorine can eat away at your pool toys, so rinsing them off on a regular basis will prolong their use. Having a place to store your pool toys, such as a deck box, is super helpful during cleanup and in general to keep your toys in the best shape. Also be sure to clean up any leftover food or drinks. Hosing down your deck is a great way to get rid of any debris that could possibly blow over into your pool.

2. Put Back Any Pool Equipment

This step depends on what pool equipment you use daily. If you have equipment like a chlorine floater or an automatic pool cleaner, you most likely took them out of your pool before everyone began to show up for your party. Now, it is time to put them all back and let them get to work.

3. Skim, Brush, & Vacuum Your Pool

It’s been a long day of fun and playing in the sun and you just want to kick your feet up and relax. These next few steps can be done in the matter of no more than 30 minutes and will make sure your pool is in top-notch shape. Go ahead and do a quick skim of your pool to get any large pieces of debris out of the water. Once you have finished with that, brush the walls of your pool to get any dirt or algae off. Now, you can rely on your automatic pool vacuum to get all the grime off the bottom of your pool.

If you don’t have the time or energy for this step, now’s the perfect time to call a professional for help. A good pool service company can also help with this next step:

4. Test Pool Water

Even though your pool may look clear after all the cleaning you just did, there can still be sunscreen, oils, sweat, and more that can potentially be harmful to your pool’s water. If it is left unchecked, this can lead to algae growth or potentially harmful germs in the water. You will want to test the Total Alkalinity, pH, Calcium Hardness, and Cyanuric Acid and then balance them as needed. It may also be smart to do a chlorine shock to get your chlorine level back up to 10 ppm. Ask a professional if you’re not sure whether to shock or not. Or, better yet: call us and we’ll run the test so you don’t have to.

5. Run Pump & Filter Systems

Your last step to achieving a clean and healthy pool is to circulate and filter your water. If your pool is extra dirty after a party, it might take a few days to get your water clear. Check your skimmer and strainer basket to see if they’re full.

Now that you’ve gotten your pool squeaky clean, it is time to finally put your feet up and relax. Keep this cleaning list in mind for all your summer pool parties. You’ll be thankful you took the extra time to put the care into your pool.
